Today, Dev-Strategist Tom Hare is going to answer 10 questions about his work and life at the netzstrategen.
1. When did you become part of the team?
I joined the netzstrategen team in May 2017, shortly after moving to Karlsruhe from the UK following six months travelling in South East Asia. I’ve been working professionally as a web developer for eleven years in the UK, Australia and now Germany.
2. What do you like most about netzstrategen?
Having worked as a freelancer for several years, I’ve got used to organising my own workload and structuring my own time. netzstrategen isn’t run like most agencies with account managers doling out work to developers and the details often being misinterpreted somewhere in the middle; we operate with a flat hierarchy and everyone is responsible for organising their own tasks. This level of autonomy is refreshing and I think it works very well!
3. What are your daily responsibilities and in which field are you specialised?
4. What impresses you the most in your field?
The number of ways it’s possible to centre something with CSS.
5. How would you explain your job to your mum?
I’ve attempted to do this many times without much success! I usually end up going with something like “I connect the things on a webpage that you can see with the things that you can’t see”. Or the car analogy; whereby the steering wheel and dashboard are the front-end of a car whereas the engine and transmission is the back-end.
6. Any tip concerning your field you’d like to give?
Never stop learning! When I first started building websites IE6 was still the most popular browser, responsive design wasn’t a thing, we were using images to put rounded corners on boxes and typography meant choosing between Tahoma and Trebuchet! When I look at the current state of front-end tooling, it’s not just a different landscape, it’s another planet entirely!
7. Which sources help you to stay up to date?
I regularly check newsboards such as Hacker News and Designer News and subscribe to several tech- or front-end related newsletters such as Smashing Magazine, CSS Weekly, Front End Front and CSS Layout News (which focuses on CSS Grid) as well as regularly checking the blogs of some notable figures in the industry.
8. Any Apps you couldn’t live without?
I’ve been using Spotify since the early days and haven’t bought a CD in years so my life would be a lot less musical without it. Whatsapp is my primary communication tool with my friends and family back in the UK and all over the World so that’s an important one for me too although Fabian and Daniel are trying very hard to get me to switch over to Telegram!
9. If someone would delete the internet tomorrow, what else would you do?
I’d head to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint and wait for it all to blow over.
10. Tell us a secret about yourself, something you haven’t told anyone yet.
Give me a few drinks, a dancefloor and some mid-2000s hip-hop and you’ll find out!
